Presentation

Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as bright eyes, Cape periwinkle, graveyard plant or rose periwinkle, is a perennial species of flowering plant in the family Apocynaceae. It is native and endemic to Madagascar, but is grown elsewhere as an ornamental and medicinal plant, and now has a pantropical distribution. It is a source of the drugs vincristine and vinblastine, used to treat cancer. I filmed this plant in the outskirts of Tarapoto, in the upper Peruvian Amazon, growing wild in one of the city's neighbourhoods, the background soundtrack is the sound of local life behind the plant. The slow motion of both sound and images enhance the dramatic and hypnotic aspect of the plant, changing it's vegetative nature into a truly active main character.

Biography

Essentially sculptural, the work of Antoine Renard is developed around issues related to the body, memory, intoxication and care. Based on research related to his cultural heritage, he explores the spheres of the digital and the olfactory in order to observe the physical and spiritual consequences of the sensorial hold. He investigates plants and perfumes, focusing on their implication in the psychic, memorial and identital construction of individuals. He is particularly interested in youth, its psychological state and its body in hybridization, as well as in societal evolutions linked to the current technological, ecological and spiritual crises.
